Living the Golden Rule
Much of success in life comes from a deep committment to the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would want them to do to you. How do you embed this concept in your personal life and reach personal success beyond dreams?

In Celebration of J. C. Penney-The Master of the Golden Rule. By Liesl Greathouse. MONTROSE–You may not know it, but Montrose has had a JC Penney for 100 years. The first JC Penney store in Montrose was a small dry goods business ...

Fascinating perspective on the life of JC Penny. I am always impressed by leaders who make the Golden Rule a central point of their business operations. In my 25 years of executive search, I've come across one client where this is important - In-and-Out Hamburgers, an iconic hamburger chain on the West Coast.

Most other organizations don't really have a defined set of values or character. Most organizations don't rally around core principles that excite, motivate, and create passion. Most employees look upon their employers as a place to earn a paycheck, and perhaps get a little intellectual stimulation. Imagine what would happen if we could unleash and sync up individual positive core values with the organization?

The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule. I think we will all agree that the most important things in life are also the simplest things in life and yet therein lies the paradox.

Great list of examples of living the Golden Rule. I liked both the religious element of this blog article than cuts across all the major religions, and I liked the philosophical perspective. Finally, the author does a nice job linking it with major songs by Bob Dylan and Rod Stewart.

Self Approval Is The Way To Personal Development Success

Self Approval Is The Way To Personal Development Success | Living the Golden Rule | Scoop.it
Self Improvement Books | One of the worst things you can do when you need to motivate yourself to reach your long held goals and dreams is to criticize yourself.

I like the idea of reinforcing your self-approval. You are a good person. One of the best ways to do this is to FORCE yourself to be approving of others vs. looking at life as win/lose competition between you and everyone else. Find ways to compliment the people around you in a sincere and heart-felt manner.

Culture of Rudeness Contributing to Government Dependency

Culture of Rudeness Contributing to Government DependencyTown HallAs rudeness is becoming increasingly common in our culture, Americans are finding it more difficult to work with each other. Far too many people now lack morals and manners.

Interesting perspective of putting at the root of many of our social problems a culture of rudeness. Where does this come from? How did we get here?

Why do we tolerate rude and inconsiderate people?

Lee Wilson's Blog: Coaches Aren't Exempt from the Golden Rule

Lee Wilson's Blog: Coaches Aren't Exempt from the Golden Rule | Living the Golden Rule | Scoop.it
Coaches Aren't Exempt from the Golden Rule. To all you coaches ... Those this example isn't sports related, I remember one "coach" who came to be the guest conductor during "music camp" when I was in college.

How many times have coaches crushed your child by being abusive, angry, and nasty in a personal attack. What gives? Who gave these coaches the right to behave irrationally in front of our children.

I laugh at the coaches who yell and abusive their players during games and practices. They are borderline dysfunctional human beings. How can we allow our children to be coached by these people.

I try to practice the golden rule everyday in coaching, sometimes I don't succeed at it, but I keep trying and working toward that most elusive goal.

Are you pre-wired to have a strong moral compass?

Are you pre-wired to have a strong moral compass? | Living the Golden Rule | Scoop.it
The corner stone comprising the framework of these practices is respect for others. Narcissistic personalities devalue respect for others, treating them as objects to be taken for granted. What matters most to these individuals is ...

Here's an interesting perspective on taking others for granted and the impact of being narcissistic. I coach high school girls basketball. I frequently see examples of this lack of morales and values in a basketball setting that is a microcosm for our larger society. Girls swear at each other, treat their coaches and fellow players with a lack of respect, and don't respect the authority of referees to the point of yelling abusive things at the refs during games. I see coaches that are verbally abuse to their players during games. I see parents that verbally abuse their own teens and the coaches of their children.

Why do some coaches tolerate this behavior in themselves and in their team? Do the lack a strong moral compass? I can't accept the usual statement of "that's the way sports works". Nothing in life works that way. What are teaching teenagers about interacting in the world once they get out of school? Is this behavior driven by their family environment and parental role models? Where does this behavior stem from? Is being narcissistic an inherited trait or one created through environment?

No one seems to want to touch the proverbial "elephant" in the room regarding what is appropriate behavior and inappropriate behavior of high school athletes. Should there be a standard?

Do teams with a strong morale and values based approach to playing and interacting succeed more often than teams without it where there is no higher purpose than winning games? Is the only way to win to allow a complete breakdown in morals and values - particularly the Golden Rule of treating others like you want to be treated?

Although this is a slight departure from the Golden Rule, it still focuses on core values. What messages to you send to others through your actions. What do our children pick up from us as adults?

What messages do I send to the girls on my high school basketball team through my actions.

All around us our opportunities to demonstrate to others our values, such as integrity. Do you take advantage of these "moments" every day, or are you a beacon/symbol for poor values and character?

People form their perception of you from your actions - not your words. Do you actively seek out opportunities to convey your positive values on a daily basis?

Character-building is a priority at Akin Road Elementary SchoolFarmington IndependentCritters and Company uses unusual animals, along with stories, to illustrate lessons about how to respect others.

Very creative approach to embedding character and values with elementary age children. They have to get it somewhere - and if parents aren't continually reinforcing good positive values, then the schools need to get involved.

We need to find places or touchpoints from which outstanding positive values can be taught to children. I personally do this through my coaching on my HS girls basketball team. I look hard for examples, illustrations, experiences that can reinforce values of harmony, working together, eliminating drama, helping each other to succeed, teamwork, caring for others, fighting through adversity, and building confidence to name just a few character traits and values that get reinforced.

This blog post struck a note for me, especially when I read the following statement by the author:

"Give others compliments. Being nice to others will help you learn to be nicer to yourself.

Generally, if you are good to the people in your life, it will come back to you through good luck. Wish others well in life so you feel positive empowerment. By keeping your emotional energy positive, you will be less likely to be pulled down and burdened by negative feelings."

Positive thinking can create a great impact on your life. With positive thoughts comes positive energy into your life thereby leading to positive personal success.

When I saw this blog post I thought of the HS girls game I coached today. So many of the girls get down on themselves after they make a mistake - they hang their head, they stop playing, they adopt a "woe is me attitude".

Positive thinking and positive self talk overcomes negativity - especially when your peers on the basketball team and coach reinforce being positive.
